23 killed in Paktika suicide attack
SHARAN (PAN): Three suicide bombers detonated a truck full of explosives in the compound of a road construction company in southeastern Paktika province, killing 23 people and injuring another 60, officials said on Monday.
The attackers shot dead the guard at the gate of Zahir Road Construction Company in Nawi Hada area of Barmal district just after 8pm and then detonated their truck bomb, the Ministry of Interior said in a statement.
Twenty-three of the company’s employees were killed and more than 60 injured, it said.
The building of the company was destroyed, an employee of the company said on condition of anonymity.
Twenty dead bodies and 40 wounded people were pulled from the debris. All of the victims were guards and workers of the company, he said.
No foreign or Afghan soldiers were among the casualties, it said.
President Hamid Karzai strongly condemned the suicide attack, a statement from presidential palace, said.
"It is bad and inhuman act which was performed by the enemies of Afghanistan. They don't want Afghans to benefit from reconstruction and development or have prosperous and stable lives," Karzai said in the statement.
Such attacks would not prevent the reconstruction of the country, but only strengthen moral and create hate of people against terrorists, Karzai, said in the statement.
Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, said they carried out the attack with a truck packed with 4.5 tonnes of explosives.
Up to 21 Afghan and foreign soldiers were killed and 27 others injured, he said.
More than 10 Taliban insurgents were killed on Sunday during an airstrike by the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force in the district.
Barmal district has long borders with South Waziristan, a tribal region of Pakistan.
