14 Pakistani soldiers killed in clash with militants
A local government official said the 14 had been killed directly by militants, while the army said they died when an army shell fired during retaliation mistakenly landed on them.
The ambush happened on Monday night in Syal Khan Village of Akakhel town of Khyber, an official told Pajhwok Afghan News on condition of anonymity.
A Lt. Col. and another officer were among 14 soldiers killed by the militants, he said.
The Taliban also suffered casualties, but the exact number was not clear, he added.
After the incident, soldiers detained 170 suspected people during a search, he said.
But a statement from the media office of the army said the soldiers were not killed in a militant attack, but by an army missile that had missed its target during their retaliation and mistakenly landed on the soldiers.
Three other soldiers were also injured and three vehicles destroyed, it added.
