KABULinfo-icon(PANinfo-icon): Two suicide bombers blew themselves up and two others were shot dead before they could explode their explosives during an assault on a coalition base in Kabul on Saturday, officials said. Three foreign soldiers were injured.

The four bombers stormed a base of the International Security Assistance Force base on the

Kabul-Jalalabad highway at about 6:30am, commander of 101st police zone, Lt. Gen. Mohammad Ayub Salangi, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

The attackers wearing woman burqainfo-icon used a car for the attack, he said. Two bombers detonated their explosives at the western gate of the Phoenix base, the two others were gunned down before they could detonate their explosives, he said. A civilian was also killed in the incident that damaged a private car and a vehicle of the defence ministry, Salangi said.

The spokesman for the Ministry of Interior, Zamrai Bashari, said three foreign soldiers were slightly injured in the attack, while a dead body was recovered from the scene. An investigation had been launched to identify the dead body, he said.

Habibullah, a driver, whose car was damaged in the attack, said he saw four fighters got out of a car and attacked the base. "Fist a heavy explosion occurred and then gunfire started," he said.

During the clash, a helicopter of US troops arrived at the scene to take the injured soldiers, Habibullah said.

An official at the ISAFinfo-icon media office said an ISAF base east of Kabul came under small arms and rocket attack this morning. The attack involved two suspected suicide bombers.

The troops retaliated by firing and killed the insurgents. Three ISAF soldiers received minor injuries in the incident, the official said.

But a Talibaninfo-icon spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, claimed that 23 foreign soldiers, three Taliban fighters and two civilians were killed in the attack. He said that four more attackers went to the scene to support their colleagues during the attack.
