The clash took place in the Samkano district when foreign troops "mistakenly" opened fire at a vehicle carrying local policemen near the district headquarters, the district chief, Sadat Khan, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

The dead included a local policeman and a national policeman, he said, adding two ISAFinfo-icon soldiers were injured when the police returned fire.

Khan said both sides accused the other of launching the attack. A delegation had been sent to the area for investigation, the district chief said.

In Kabulinfo-icon, ISAF media office said the attack was carried out by the Talibaninfo-icon. One ISAF soldier was injured in the assault and an Afghan policeman was killed, the force said in a statement,

But a Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, claimed one of their fighters who had joined the local police force killed eight foreign troops and injured six others in the assault. The attacker was later killed by foreign troops, he added.
