2 dead in Herat oil depot blaze

Apr 03, 2011 - 19:37

HERATCITY (PANinfo-icon): Two people were burned to death after a fire broke out in an oil depot in western Herat province on Sunday, police said.

Tonnes of oil were lost to the fire that erupted west of Herat city, the provincial capital, in the afternoon, police spokesman, Col. Noor Khan Nekzad, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

The head of an oil traders association, Najibullah Yousafzai, said the fire broke out in the depot situated on the Herat-Islamab Qala highway at about 2pm.

He said the fire appeared to have been caused by welding work at the depot. He said they had urged foreign troops for help to put up the blaze.

He confirmed two people were killed and a third wounded in the incident that inflicted thousands of dollars of losses on the depot owner.
