ISAF vows intensified counterinsurgency efforts

KABULinfo-icon(PANinfo-icon): The NATOinfo-icon led mission in Afghanistaninfo-icon on Monday vowed intensified counterinsurgency operations in the country's south and east to prevent rebels from regaining control of lost areas.

The anti-government Talibaninfo-icon fighters would try to recapture areas they lost during winter operations by foreign troops, ISAFinfo-icon spokesman, Josef Blotz, told a weekly press conference in Kabul.

He said they wanted to step up operations in the summer in order to frustrate the designs of insurgents to recapture lost grounds.

A joint operation was underway in eastern Kunar province, where cooperation between Afghan, Pakistaninfo-icon and ISAF troops had been effective, Blotz told reporters.

A week back, ISAF said 25 militants and six alliance soldiers were killed in clashes in Kunar.

Blotz said efforts were in place to retake the Wanat Waigal district from the Taliban in neighbouring Nuristan.

On March 29, hundreds of Taliban fighters overran the district after a brief resistance was put up by local security forces. The Taliban are currently in control of the district headquarters, officials say.
