KABULinfo-icon(PANinfo-icon): An Afghan-international security force patrol killed two insurgents and confiscated a large narcotics cache during a clearing operation in Maiwand district of southern Kandahar province, NATOinfo-icon said on Wednesday.

The insurgents were killed on Tuesday when they tried to engage the combined forces, the alliance said in a statement.

A large drugs cache consisting of 2,340 pounds (1,060 kilograms) of opium was seized, it said.

Elsewhere, numerous insurgents were killed and many others forced to flee during separate engagements in southern Helmand province, the statement said.

ISAFinfo-icon patrols were engaged by numerous insurgents in Nahr-i Saraj and Sangin districts on Wednesday, ISAF media office in Kabul said in a statement.

The coalition forces returned fire and called for artillery and air support. Several militants were killed when the air weapons team engaged the enemy positions, it said.

Also in Helmand province, an ISAF patrol found a weapons cache in Marjah district consisting of one 82 mm mortar round, two anti-personnel mines, several ball bearings and several rocket fuses.

Another weapons cache consisting of 18 82 mm recoilless rifle rounds, homemade explosives, and several IED-making components was found in Sar Kani district of eastern Kunar province by an ISAF patrol, the statement said.
