PUL-I-ALAM (PANinfo-icon): Insurgents blew up a mobile phone tower in the central province of Logar, officials said on Thursday.

The tower belonging to a private telecommunication company, MTN, was destroyed with explosives in Zarghun City of Mohammad Agha district on Wednesday night, crime branch chief, Col. Mohammad Jan Abid, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

The gunmen blew up the tower after overpowering the company's guards, he said.

"Telecommunication companies have stopped operating from 7pm to 9am in Pul-i-Alam, Mohammad Agha, Baraki Barak, Charkh and Khwakhi districts over the past two nights," the police official said. He said police had discussed the incident with provincial communication director.

A Talibaninfo-icon spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, asserted responsibility for the incident in Mohammad Agha district, saying they had warned mobile phone companies to suspend their operations during night time. He said the companies did not stop activities during the nights and warned destroying all of their towers if they continued to violate their directives.

He accused mobile phone companies of spying for Afghan and international forces during their operations against Taliban.
