TIRINKOT (PAN): A partnered force of Afghan and coalition soldiers drove out insurgents and reclaimed a key checkpoint in the Shahid-i-Hassas district of central Uruzgan province two days ago, the coalition said on Friday.

On March 23, Taliban insurgents attacked the checkpoint, killing a police commander and several villagers, including a young boy, according to an Afghan National Police official, the Bagram-based US military said in a statement.

The joint forces reclaimed the position on Wednesday (April 6) in the Afghan forces-led operation advised and assisted by coalition forces.

After the partnered force recovered the checkpoint, they came under small arms fire from insurgents who were seeking to reclaim their position, the statement said, adding the combined force drove out insurgents from the area with the help of local villagers.

An Afghan National Security Force team member said villagers requested a shura with Afghan and coalition officials to discuss future security presence at the checkpoint location.
