Apr 08, 2011 - 16:36

MAHMOOD RAQI (PANinfo-icon): A Talibaninfo-icon-designated deputy governor for central Kapisa province was among 14 militants killed in a NATOinfo-icon airstrike, an official said on Friday.

The Taliban official was killed along with his 13 fighters on Thursday night in the Ghain area of Nijrab district, the district chief, Atta Mohammad Nazari, said.

Mohammad Zahir, the Taliban shadow deputy Kapisa governor, was killed in the overnight strike by NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAFinfo-icon) forces, he said.

Police spokesman, Asadullah Hamidi, confirmed as many as 13 fighters loyal to Zahir had been killed in the attack.

Active in Nijrab district, the insurgents were killed in Alasai district after foreign soldiers chased them fleeing to a neighbouring district, the police official said.

ISAF's media office in a statement said an operation was carried out in Nijrab district, but it did not release any details.

"The airstrike targeted Zahir along with his fighters in a mountainous area," Mirwais, a resident, said.
