KABUL fighters have been killed and 29 others injured during security forces’ operations across the country over a week, an official said on Sunday.

A dozen civilians and nine policemen lost their lives in various incidents of violence during the period, with another 68 people, including 34 civilians and 29 militants, sustaining injuries, an interior ministry spokesman said.

Casualties inflicted on civilians showed about 57 percent decrease compared to the previous week, Zamaray Bashari, the interior ministry spokesman, told a weekly press conference in Kabul.

Police casualties reduced by 11 percent during the week, he said, adding nine policemen have been killed and five others wounded in various violence-related incidents. Casualties among insurgents were also declined by five percent, the official said.

Eighty-five violence-related incidents were reported last week, when 159 suspects arrested on the charges of terrorist activities.

More than 118 different kinds of weapons were recovered and 157 roadside bombs defused, Bashari said.

The weapons and bombs were handed over to the Disbandment of Illegal Armed Groups (DIAG) programme, he said.
