Insurgents, civilians dead in Faryab operation

During the joint Afghan-coalition operation in Bal Chiragh district, one insurgent killed three children and wounded four other women-led force said in a statement.

The troops separated the women and children and cordoned them into a courtyard as initial combat broke out. One of the fighters pointed a weapon through an adjacent window and then threw a hand grenade into the courtyard area, resulting in the deaths and injuries of civilians.

Five Afghan and coalition security personnel were also wounded, the statement said, adding the force was targeting the appointed head of the Taliban Commission for Faryab, as well as a rebel leader.

Security forces provided immediate medical care for the women and children, who were later transported to a medical facility, the statement said. 

“This is yet another example of insurgents wilfully murdering Afghan civilians,” said Rear Adm. Hal Pittman, ISAF deputy chief of staff for communication. “This kind of blatant disregard for the lives of innocent Afghans is reprehensible…”
