KABUL): President Hamid Karzai and US Undersecretary of Defense Michele Flournoy conferred on strategic cooperation and the transfer of the security responsibility to Afghan forces.
Flournoy, who also visited Kandahar and Helmand provinces, assured Karzai of continued US assistance to Afghanistan even after the completion of the security transition in 2014, the Presidential Palace said.
She lauded the Afghan government’s achievements, including good governance and economic development, during the last one year, a statement from Karzai’s office said.
The visiting dignitary promised that the United States, aware of bitter past experiences, would not abandon Afghanistan.
Permanent peace in the country was one basic condition of the Afghan government and people for signing a strategic cooperation agreement with the US, Karzai told his interlocutor.
He underlined the need for American investment in different sectors of the economy and continued cooperation in equipping and strengthening Afghan forces after the security transfer was over.
