Karzai is part of the problem: Abdullah

“I’m pretty sure that he will make attempts in order to stay beyond 2014,” Abdullah told the popular Charlie Rose show on the PBS channel, his first television interview, on Tuesday.
Chairman of the Coalition for Hope and Change, Abdullah, is scheduled to address more than half a dozen think tanks, meet congressional leaders and officials of the Obama administration.
“According to the constitution of Afghanistan, you can’t do that, but he might just create an emergency situation or resort to emergency provisions in the constitution,” the former foreign minister said of Karzai’s quest to stay in power.
Abdullah said Karzai’s failure to promote good governance and fight corruption had made the prospect of the transition even more difficult.
He alleged Karzai had turned himself into a problem rather than being part of the solution. “The Karzai government in itself it has turned into a problem rather than being part of the solution. That’s the main challenge for the people of Afghanistan as well as friends of Afghanistan…”
Scheduled to address the World Islamic Forum Conference in Washington, Abdullah warned it would be difficult to meet the much-anticipated transition deadline. This he attributed to the alleged failure of the current government.
He urged the Obama administration to revisit its Afghan policy so that Afghans were assured that the US supported not just an individual or a group, but the people of Afghanistan.
Afghans that the US would remain supportive of Karzai and his government under all circumstances, he said. “I’m not saying that this is the actual case but this is the perception of the people of Afghanistan. And that needs to be changed.”
