Legal team to probe cases of female inmates: Ghazanfar

KABUL affairs minister said on Wednesday.

The proposed body would pay visit to the jail every month, Husan Bano Ghazanfar, said during a visit to the prison in Badam Bagh area. She also distributed some materials, including shampoo, skin cream and toothpaste, to female prisoners.

The inmates complained that their cases had not been investigated for a long time.

“The court heard my case twice in two years, and I am waiting to have my case heard for a third time so my fate is known,” Momina, 57, a resident of Istalif district of Kabul, who had been arrested on the charge of kidnapping the child of her husband’s second wife, said.

Momina is not the only woman waiting for a court verdict on her fate, but a large number of other women and girls have been waiting for investigation into their cases at the prison. Momina said she had no hand in the kidnapping.

In response to complaints from inmates, the acting minister promised that a legal team would be ordered to investigate cases of all women in the prison every month.

Jail superintendent, Col. Ami Mohammad Amwajpur, said new changes were on the cards. He had no detailed information about cases of women in the jail for being new to the post.

Up to 166 inmates are being held at the facility for committing different crimes, including murders, runaway from homes, drug smuggling, kidnapping and other crimes.

Amwajpur said in addition to investigation of cases, the inmates would also be provided different vocational trainings, including tailoring, carpet weaving and beauty parlor. Their children would also be provided opportunity to get education, he said.
