TALOQAN (PAN Natural Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA) warned on Thursday.

The houses are located in Hazrat Osta, Islamabad, Taheri and Wajeda Qeshlaq villages and Darqad and Yangi Qala districts, ANDMA provincial head, Abdul Razzaq Zinda, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

The water level would further rise during the summer, he said, warning that the situation could lead to heavy damages if timely precautionary measures were not taken.

He reckoned nearly a thousand houses were under threat of destruction. In some locations, he said, the river had burst its banks, causing floodingin nearby areas.  Zinda said the snow on mountains would start melting in late summer that would increase the possibility of floods.

People living in these areas are worried. Bashir Ahmad, 50, a resident of the Islamabad village, said they were concerned, but had no money to live in safer areas. “All the time, I feel scared,” he said, urging the authorities concerned to come to their rescue.

Irrigation Director Mohammed Salim said that strengthening river’s banks needed $10.5 million. He said the European Union hadpledged to pay the amount.
