HERAT CITY (PAN militants have kidnapped more than a dozen Iranian and Afghan employees of a road construction company in western Farah province, a senior police officer said on Monday.

The 11 Iranian and two Afghan workers were kidnapped while going to their worksite on a road project six kilometres from the Push Rod district centre late on Sunday, the Farah police chief told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Brig. Gen. Mohammad Roshan Dil said the 125-kilometre road connected the provincial capital, Farah City, with the Khwaja Abu Nasr customs office near the Iranian border. The Iranian-funded project will account for $30 million (1.375 billion afghanis)

Farah Public Works Director Hazrat Shaiq confirmed the incident, saying that they had received a report about the abduction of 16 Iranians and Afghans. He had no information as to how many of the captives are Iranian.

Work on the road, 65 kilometres of which have already been paved, was launched two years ago, according to the director.
