Hundreds rally against paper mill in Kabul

Residents of Deh Sabz district claimed they saving three tonnes of books and copies of the holy Quran from being recycled into toilet papers by the ‘Lalah’ company.

Amanullah, one of the demonstrators, said: “Turning textbooks and Quran copies into toilet papers is disrespect to Islam.” He demanded the company’s detained owner must be sentenced to death.

Qari Abdul Rahman, speaking on behalf of the protestors, accused Westerners of being involved in the matter. “If Muslims ignore such affront, Islam will be disrespected across the world.”

“No one in Afghanistan would have dared denigrate Islam if the American pastor, who burned a copy of the holy book in Florida, had have been punished,” he said.

District police chief, Col. Zamaray Nasiri, said Ehsanullah, the Lalah Company director, was arrested on Sunday. The people who had provided the company with the waste paper are being chased.

Mohammad Amel, who has been working for the mill for a week, claimed: “I saw books and copies of the Quran in the backyard of the company. The books were meant for making toilet papers.”

Amel said he and his co-worker, Sidiqullah, informed local people about the books. People stormed the company at 10am and the director escaped.

Speaking to Pajhwok at the Deh Sabz detention centre, the director held an individual named Siddiqullah responsible for collecting scrap paper. He said he had lodged a report with the 101st Asmayee police headquarters two days ago for the arrest of Siddiqullah.
