Kidnapped Iranian engineers freed in Farah

ZARANJ (PAN militants earlier in the week in western Farah province, were freed on Wednesday evening.

The 14 Iranian and two Afghan workers had been kidnapped while going to a road project site six kilometres from the Pusht-i-Rod district centre on Sunday. One of the captives escaped the kidnappers two days back.

The engineers have been freed without any deal with the captors, the Farah police chief told Pajhwok Afghan News. Brig. Gen. Mohammad Roshan Dil said the men were in good health.

Roshan Dil added the Iranian and Afghan citizens had been freed as a result of efforts by tribal elders and locals. However, he would not say where the workers were taken following their release.

The engineers were working on a 125-kilometre road connecting Farah City with the Khwaja Abu Nasr customs office near the Iranian border. The Iranian-funded project will account for $30 million. Work on the road, 65 kilometres of which have already been paved, was launched two years ago.
