The death was announced in a brief statement from the ISAF media office, which neither disclosed the soldier’s nationality nor the exact location of the assault.

But the presidency in Paris said one French soldier was killed and nine others were wounded in a militant strike in central Kapisa province.

A statement from the Elysee Palace said the soldiers were travelling in an armoured vehicle when the attack occurred. The victim was identified as a corporal with the 2nd Marine Infantry Regiment,

Of its 3,979 troops in Afghanistan, France has lost 56 soldiers since its joining the international military mission in 2001. France is the fourth largest contributor to the NATO-led force.

The fatality brings to 135 the number of foreign soldiers killed in Afghanistan since the start of 2011. Last year, the deadliest for ISAF, more than 710 international servicemembers lost their lives in the country.
