KABUL): President Hamid Karzai on Sunday denounced the killing of a peace council member and former district chief in the southern province of Helmand.
Haji Zahir was shot dead late on Saturday night in the Kart-i-Lagan area of the provincial capital, Lashkargah.
Zahir was appointed as Marja district chief last year when the Taliban were ousted from the district as a result of a massive operation. Six months later, he resigned and joined the Helmand Peace Council.
In a statement from his office, the president said the incident had once again unmasked “the ugly face of Afghanistan‘s enemies, who are used by outsiders to destroy the country and kill its brave people.”
He directed the provincial authorities to use all its resources to bring the killers to justice as soon as possible.
