Obama updated on situation in Afghanistan

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said Monday’s meeting was not supposed to be a decision-making event. This, in fact, was part of his monthly consultations on Afghanistan and Pakistan, he added

“This is not a decisional meeting. This is one of the regular monthly meetings, run by the president on Afghanistan and Pakistan with the usual principals involved,” he said in response to a question.

Obama received a briefing on the Afghan security situation, efforts to sustain the momentum against the Taliban, the transition to the Afghan security lead and continued support for their increased capability and the reconciliation process, he continued.

The president was also updated on efforts to ensure effective cooperation with Pakistan against Al Qaeda and other violent extremists, the White House said in a statement.

Vice President Joe Biden, Secretary of Defence Robert Gates, Attorney General Eric Holder, Ambassador to UN Susan Rice, National Security Advisor Tom Donilon, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper and Assistant to President for Homeland Security John O. Brennan attended the meeting.

Karl Eikenberry, the US ambassador to Afghanistan, Carl Munter, the ambassador to Pakistan, and ISAF Commander General David Petraeus joined via videoconference.
