KABUL): Two tonnes of drugs have been seized during separate operations over the past 24 hours in different parts of the country, the interior ministry said on Wednesday.
Up to 1470 kilograms of opium and 124 kg of heroin were seized by counter narcotics police in Khashrod district of southwestern Nimroz province, a statement from the Ministry of Interior said.
“The seizure by counternarcotics police could have caused a loss of millions of dollars to traffickers and drug mafia besides preventing benefits to Taliban and Al Qaeda from the narcotics,” the statement added.
Separately, 500 kilograms of opium and 500 litres of acid were recovered in Washer district of southern Helmand province. Forty kg of opium, two kg of crystal and five kg of ammonium nitrate were seized by Afghan commandos and International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Achin district of eastern Nangarhar province.
No one has so far been detained in connection with the drugs and weapons. A search for the traffickers is underway.
