KABUL): The US Army Corps of Engineers said on Friday it awarded $15 million (nearly 6.82 billion afghanis) in contracts to Afghan companies in support of the local security forces.

The Omran Holding Group was given an $11.8 million contract for the design, construction and renovation of the Pul-i-Charkhi Garrison Headquarters for the Afghan army in Kabul.

The project involves renovating four single-storey barrack buildings, the construction and renovation of new administration and classroom buildings, a new motor pool, a helipad, a weapons maintenance workshop and a new infantry battalion.

A statement from the corps said the second contract was a joint venture awarded for $3 million to Omid Ma Construction Co. and Golden Bridge Construction Co. for the design and construction of a uniformed police district headquarters facility in Paktika province.

The headquarters will consist of one female and one male barrack, a headquarters building, a criminal investigative directorate and a family response unit. Both projects are expected to take one year to complete,” it added.
