KABUL): The country’s leading prosecutor, Mohammad Ishaq Aloko, has suspended a former election watchdog spokesman as teacher at Kabul University, a move that sparked protest demonstration by students on Saturday.

In a letter to the Ministry of High Education, Aloko argued former Electoral Complaints Commission spokesman, Ahmad Zia Rafat, was involved in fraud during last year’s parliamentary election and he has been suspended as teacher at the Kabul university under the constitution.

However, Rafat called his suspension as illegal and the legacy of his differences with the AG.

He said his job as a professor at the Kabul University had nothing to do with politics. He said he was ready to stand trial if he was proved guilty of wrong doing during the elections.

He also said the AGO had no right to investigate fraud cases linked to the Sept. 18 ballot.

Calls seeking comments from the AG about Rafat’s suspension were not answered.

A number of Kabul University students protested against the suspension of their professor. They warned to continue their protest until Rafat was reinstated as professor.
