FAIZABAD (PAN): More than 3,000 students would benefit from the construction of five school buildings in a remote district of northeastern Badakhshan province, an official said on Sunday.

The buildings constructed for Kharandaz, Payan-i-Shahr, Chap Chi Yardad, Sakhaw and Rabatak in Baharak district were inaugurated by Governor Shah Waliullah, said education official Syed Musadiq Dehqan.

The buildings were constructed at a cost of about $386,000 (17.5 million afghanis), provided by the Central Asia Institute, he said. There are about 26 schools in Baharak, where 17,271 students are enrolled.

Fifty percent of the 657 schools in Badakhshan lacked proper buildings and students attend classes under tents or in the open, the education department head, Abdul Mabood Wadoodi, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

On the other hand, students complained they had no qualified teachers. One of their major problems was the shortage of competent teachers in the province, said Shakira, a student at the Chap Chi Yardan School.

“Most of them fail to teach us professionally,” she said, adding that some of the teachers were 12th grade graduates.
