JALALABAD (PAN‘s Chitral valley, an official said on Wednesday.
The operation was carried out in Awala Gul, Chapo and Badmook valleys of Barg-i-Matal district, border police commander in the east, Brig. Gen. Aminullah Amarkhel, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
The offensive involved the border police personnel, Afghan commandos and coalition troops. The militants were detained with arms and ammunitions on Tuesday night in different parts of the district, the police commander said.
The morale of foreign militants had weakened due to the operation, he said, adding most of the insurgents had fled the district. Amarkhel promised the operation would be extended to Kamdesh district, where militants have been in control over the last three years.
Governor Jamaluddin Badr and residents said many areas of Barg-i-Matal had been cleared of militants. Badr said the Ministry of Defence and international troops had pledged an operation in militancy-plagued areas.
A Taliban spokesman confirmed the death of two fighters and injuries to three others during the operation. Zabihullah Mujahid claimed the rebels inflicted heavy casualties on the security personnel.
