QALAT (PAN) soldier was killed in an improvised explosive device strike on the outskirts of Qalat, the capital of southern Zabul province, the alliance said on Friday.
The blast took place on the Kabul-Kandahar highway in the Spin Ghabarg area on Thursday afternoon, ISAF’s media office in the south said in a statement.
The troops were on a patrol on the highway when came under attack, leaving one soldier dead and a tank damaged, it said.
Romanian and American troops are based in Zabul to assist Afghan forces in maintaining security for the region.
Mohammad Rafique, a resident of the area, told Pajhwok Afghan News that it was a powerful explosion that overturned the troops’ vehicle. The security personnel had cordoned off the site of the blast, he said.
There was no claim of responsibility for the attack that came three days after three foreign soldiers were injured in a similar incident in the same area.
