MAHMOOD RAQI (PAN): As many as 84 schools out of 220 have no proper buildings in the central provincial of Kapisa, where students attend their classes under tents and in the open, officials said on Saturday.

According to the Ministry of Education, 120,000 students are studying in 66 high, 72 middle and 116 primary schools in the province.

The deputy education director, Abdul Rassoul Sapi, said the ministry had pledged to construct some buildings for schools in the province.

A student of the Hazrat Ali Middle School, Tariq, told Pajhwok Afghan News that students were facing various problems due to a lack of building for their school. He said they were compelled to attend classes in tents despite harsh weather conditions.

The Afghan government and the world community should construct buildings for schools in the province, another student of Ghaziabad High School in Tagab district, Javed, said.

“Our school lacks chairs so we bring carpets from homes to sit on at class,” a student of Atta Mohammad Primary School, Habib, said. Students use notebooks and books as umbrellas to hide themselves from sizzling sun, he complained.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Education, Abdul Saboor Ghufrani, said the ministry planned to construct buildings for schools in all provinces. He did not clarify the number of buildings to be built in Kapisa.

The ministry had funds to construct 540 buildings for schools across the country. About 120 buildings were constructed by the ministry last year and more structures were being built with the help of donors, Ghufrani said.

As many as 14,100 schools are operational in the 34 provinces of the country, with 45 percent of them having no proper buildings, according to the spokesman.
