QALA-I-NAW (PAN): Foreign soldiers arrested six influential figures during a joint offensive with Afghan soldiers in the western province of Badghis, an official and residents said on Sunday.

The elders were detained in Boom Dara area of Qadis district late on Saturday night, a resident, Maulvi Mohammad Hanif, told Pajhwok Afghan News.  He identified the detainees as Sakhidad, Momin, Gul Agha, Momin’s son, and three others. However, he said foreign soldiers had told area people that the detainees would be freed soon after an interrogation.

Deputy governor Abdul Ghani Sabiri confirmed the arrests.

The governor had talked to foreign soldiers about the arrests, his spokesman, Sharafuddin, said. The reason behind the arrests was unknown as yet, he said.
