GHAZNI CITY (PAN): Construction work on two key bridges, connecting people living on both sides of a river in southern Ghazni province, was launched on Sunday, officials said.

The  bridges, each 40 metre-long and two-metre wide, would be cosntructed with a cost of more than five million afghanis ($108,980) Ghazni mayor, Sayed Abdul Basir, said.

The structures were being built under the developmental budget of Ghazni municipality and would take two months to complete, Governor Musa Khan Akbarzada, told Pajhwok Afghan News during the inaguration ceremoeny.

Residnts said the bridges would resolve prbolems of residents liviing on both sides of the river and would add to the beautify of the city.

On Saturday, work on a bridge was also launched in Qadam Qala area of the province. The bridge was estimated to cost $75,000 being provided by the Polish government, officials say.

Elswehre, construction work on a 140 metre-long and nine-metre wide bridge was launched in southeastern Khost province on Sunday.

Officails said the bridge would help resolve problems being faced by residents of Khost, Paktika and Paktia provinces.

Funded by the World Bank, the project would cost 40,000,000 afghanis, officials of National Rural Access Programme (NRAP), said.

Work on the bridge could not be accompolished since 2008 due to security and technical problems, NRAP chief, Amin Omar, said.

He hoped the project would usher into a new era of prosperity for the people of Khost, Paktia and Paktika provinces.
