Nuristan clashes leave 4 militants dead: police

JALALABAB (PAN): Four militants were killed and several others were wounded in clashes with security forces after hundreds of insurgents attacked security posts in the eastern province of Nuristan, an official said on Wednesday.

Laced with AK-47s, rocket-propelled grenades and machineguns, about 400 militants pounded checkpoints around a base housing police-reserve units located about 11 miles (18 kilometers) south of the provincial capital of Paroon on Tuesday.

Tuesday’s clashes continued late into the evening in Chitras and Koshtal areas, police chief, Brig. Gen. Shamsur Rahman Zahid, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Four insurgents were killed and another 10 wounded, he said, adding three policemen were also injured. NATO.

The police chief said a joint operation by Afghan and foreign troops would soon be launched against militants in the region.

A Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, said the fighters captured three security checkpoints, killing and injuring 10 policemen.
