May 17, 2011 - 19:12

MAZAR-I-SHARIF (PANinfo-icon): A NATOinfo-icon-led foreign soldier was killed and five others were wounded in a traffic accident in northern Balkh province on Monday, the alliance said.

The accident happened near Mazar-i-Sharif, the provincial capital in the afternoon, NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAFinfo-icon) office in Kabulinfo-icon said in a statement.

Without releasing his identity, the force said a service member died of his non-combat-related injuries. Five others soldiers were injured in the mishap that took place 20 kilometres east of Mazar-i-Sharif on the Kabul-Balkh highway, the statement said.

A local police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, said two ISAF soldiers were killed and seven others were wounded in the accident. He suspected it was a roadside blast that killed and wounded foreign troops.

On Tuesday, NATO announced the death of its four soldiers in the country's south.

So far 177 foreign troops have been killed in different parts of the country since the beginning of this year.
