MEHTARLAM (PAN): Two people were killed and six others wounded as a result of a clash in the eastern province of Laghman, officials said on Sunday.
The clash erupted at 7am in a desert near Mahtarlam, the provincial capital, the governor’s spokesman, Faizanullah Patan, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Security forces, who received a tip-off that militants planned an attack on the police headquarters, set up an ambush and engaged the assailants on Sunday morning, he said.
One civilian was killed and six others, including three security personnel, were wounded, Patan added.
The clash took place in the Kochi-inhabited Sultan Ghazni Baba town on the outskirts of Mahtarlam, Mayor Abdullah Niazai said. Two Kochis, including a woman, were killed in militants’ fire, he added.
Three civilians, a policeman, an Afghan National Army (ANA) soldier and a National Directorate of Security (NDS) employee were among the injured, he said.
There were no militants in their area, but security forces opened fire on civilians, said Nazifullah Rostan, a resident who had brought the injured to Jalalabad Civil Hospital.
