KABUL (MoPH) plans to set up a number of nursing schools across the country, a cabinet minister said on Sunday.

Thirty nurses would be enrolled at each of the schools in all 34 provinces, acting Minister of Public Health Dr. Suraya Dalil said at a function marking International Nurses’ Day.

Speaking at a graduation ceremony for about 250 nurses, she said 9th and 12th grade students would be enrolled at the schools, to be set up by 2014. They will be provided 18 months training.

Currently, there are about 5,500 nurses in Afghanistan, according to the minister. In line with international health standards, the country needs another 25,000 nurses.
