Taliban hiring women for suicide attacks: Gen. Blotz

May 23, 2011 - 16:15

KABULinfo-icon (PANinfo-icon): The Talibaninfo-icon are trying to convincing womeninfo-icon into carrying out suicide attacks in Afghanistaninfo-icon, the International Security Assistance Force (ISAFinfo-icon) said on Monday.

On May 17, a combined Afghan and coalition security force killed four insurgents, including two armed women, during a security operation in Taloqan, the capital of northern Takhar province.

The operation was conducted in pursuit of an Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan facilitator, who acquires, constructs and moves weapons and explosives throughout the province, the alliance said.

The airstrike was followed by a violent protest, in which a dozen people were killed and 90 wounded. The protestors claimed the foreign troops had killed ordinary people during the raid.

"All those killed in the nighttime raid in Taloqan were members of the Uzbek militant group, trying to destabilise the country," ISAF spokesman, Josef Blotz, told reporters in Kabul.

He rejected claims that the NATOinfo-icon-led soldiers sexually assaulted the women before killing them. Afghan soldiers accompanied their international partners, he said. The offensive was supported by the governor's house, he added.

A team has been set up to determine reasons behind the protest, he said, alleging some outsiders wanted to destabilise the security situation in the province.
