May 26, 2011 - 18:08

QALAT (PANinfo-icon): The first phase of a 23-kilometre canal has been completed in the southern province of Zabul on Thursday, a senior official said.

A three-kilometre retaining wall was also constructed along the canal, Governor Mohammad Ashraf Nasiri told Pajhwok Afghan News.

The first portion of the Mirza Gul Mohammad Canal cost $300,000 (13.8 million afghanis) provided by the US-led Provincial Reconstructioninfo-icon Team, he said. The project was completed in six months.

With the construction of the canal, the irrigation problem of 25 villages would be resolved, the governor said.
