KABUL): Afghan lawmakers have to take a decision on permanent US military bases in the country, a visiting Iranian parliamentarian said on Thursday.

The idea of US bases in Afghanistan was nothing new, the chairman of Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission told reporters in Kabul.

Alaeddin Boroujerdi said what was important to Iran was the neighbour’s sovereignty, security and dignity. “Americans have bases in Turkey as well, but they are not an issue for us.”

He also announced Iran’s willingness for transferring Afghan prisoners to their country. The handover depended on Afghanistan’s readiness, the official added.

On Sunday, an Afghan official alleged Tehran continued to execute the Afghan refugees on death row in the neighbouring country in violation of an agreement with Kabul.

Two Afghans were executed in Sistan city of Baluchistan province, which borders Afghanistan, on May 7, the official said, identifying the victims as Khalil, son of Sher Ahmad, and Hamid, son of Adam Khan, from the Nahtani sub-tribe of Baloch, from Nimroz province.

In January, Minister of Justice Habibullah Ghalib said 5,000 Afghan refugees, 60 percent of them accused of drug trafficking, 10 percent of robberies and the rest of other crimes, were languishing in Iranian jails.

At a meeting late on Wednesday night, President Hamid Karzai assured the visiting parliamentarian that Afghan-US strategic cooperation would pose no threat to the region.

Boroujerdi believed Afghans were unhappy with the presence of foreign forces on their soil and Iran, being a neighbour of the war-torn country, could gauge that feeling.

International troops, tasked with combating terrorism in Afghanistan, often targetted civilians and wedding parties, he alleged. The production of illicit drugs in the country has shot up since the deployment of foreigners, he claimed.

Boroujerdi, who also met Vice-President Qasim Fahim, High Peace Council Chairman Burhanuddin Rabbani, National Security Advisor Rangin Dadfar Spanta and lawmakers, called for increased international cooperation in ridding the region of narcotics.
