KABUL): President Hamid Karzai on Monday condemned twin suicide blasts that killed four people and wounded several others, including Italian soldiers, in the western province of Herat, the President’s Office said.
Ten Italian soldiers were injured in a gun attack following two back-to-back explosions, with one blowing up the gate of Italian-led provincial reconstruction team compound and the second hitting a convoy of foreign troops, in Herat city, the provincial capital.
Official sources said four people were killed and 24 others, including a woman and four children and three PRT guards, were wounded.
Italian press agency Ansa reported that 15 Italians were injured, quoting parliamentary sources.
“The terrorists have once again proved their enmity with innocent people of Afghanistan by carrying out attacks in crowded areas,” Karzai was quoted as saying in a statement issued from his palace.
“Militants should realise that they would not be able to reach their targets through such cowardly acts,” Karzai said. He expressed sympathies with families of victims of the back-to-back attacks.
