Lashkargah, Mazar-i-Sharif, Mahtarlam, Herat City, Kabul’s Sarobi district, Bamyan City, Dai Kundi and Panjsher provinces are first areas where the security responsibility would be handed over to Afghan forces by Western troops, beginning in July.
Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai, supervisor of the transition process, is in Lashkargah at the head of a delegation to discuss the situation with local officials. He is accompanied by lawmakers from Helmand and senior security and intelligence officials.
The delegation held a meeting with local officials in Lashkargah. Ashraf Ghani told the participants they had been assured that there would be no hurdle to the security transfer to the Afghan lead. All preparations had been completed, he added.
Ghani also referred to residents’ complaints against the municipality and lack of transparency in affairs of government departments. He said the provincial justice department was incapable of meeting people’s demands. He stressed the need for resolving the problems being faced by residents.
He said the transition would be followed by changes in government departments, as all affairs would be Afghan-led. Ghani hailed progress with regard to good governance in the province, saying visible changes had taken place.
Speaking on the occasion, Governor Gulab Mangal said preparations for the security handover had been completed and a comprehensive plan worked out. He said new security posts in areas adjacent to Lashkargah had been established.
