KANDAHAR (PAN): Two tribal elders were shot dead and two others injured in the southern province of Kandahar, officials said on Wednesday.

Unidentified militants gunned down a tribal elder, Haji Bedar, also known as Haji Malik Kako, on Wednesday morning in the Kokaran area of Arghandab town, the district chief told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He cooperated with the government in raising a local police force, and it could be the motive behind his death, Haji Shah Mohammad believed.

Deputy police chief, Sher Shah Yousafzai, also confirmed the death and said the elder was killed in the 7th police district. An investigation into the murder has been launched.

Bordering Pakistan claiming responsibility for most of the attacks.

Separately, another elder was killed and three others were injured on Tuesday evening in the Nalgham area of Zherai district. The district chief, Niaz Mohammad, said the elders came under attack while returning home from a meeting on the security situation.

He accused the militants of spreading fear among people to prevent them from cooperating with the government. No one has so far claimed responsibility for the incident.
