US House proposes $13b for Afghan security forces

WASHINGTON (PANinfo-icon): The US House Appropriations Committee a draft defence appropriations bill, allocating $13 billion for training and equipping of Afghan security forces in 2012.

Released on Tuesday, the draft bill also includes $475 million for Afghan Infrastructure Fund during the fiscal year ending on September 30, 2013. Of the $13 billion, the defence appropriations bill proposes $15 million for coalition police trainer life support costs.

The bill also allocates $1.1 billion to Pakistaninfo-icon but its language includes withholding 75 percent of the Pakistan Counter-insurgency Capability Funds until the secretary of defense provides a report to Congress on a strategy and metrics for the use of the funds.

While making small cuts to the defence base budget, the bill boosts spending for Iraq and Afghanistaninfo-icon by $841 million. The allocation of $119 billion for military operations in the two countries show $841 million more than the Pentagon asked for.
