Extension to school buildings begins

KABUL Bank-funded project, was launched in the southern province of Ghazni, officials said on Thursday.

The extension of Bakawal and Nawabad high schools would cost $320,000 and take eight months to complete under the Education Quality Improvement Programme.

Education Director Hosni Mubarak Azizi told Pajhwok Afghan News a dozen new rooms would be added to each school in addition to the construction of new toilets and water wells.

He also said extension work on 33 schools had been launched across the province to solve the space problem facing students.

Nearly 3,000 students enrolled at the Bakawal High School have to study in four shifts due to lack of space, Principal Syed Gul Hassan said. About 30 percent of students are studying under tents or trees at 557 schools across the province, he added.

Separately, a school building benefiting 600 students was inaugurated in the northern province of Sar-i-Pul on Thursday.

Spread over two acres of land, the building cost 4 million afghanis provided by the education ministry. The building has six classrooms, a libratory, two administrative rooms and other facilities.
