Karzai attends Italian birthday celebration
Besides Karzai, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, US Vice President Joe Biden, Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping and UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon attended the celebration.
With representatives from 90 countries and international organisations in attendance, the two-hour celebration included a military march, the Presidential Palace in Kabul said.
Accompanied by his Foreign Minister Zalmay Rasul and the Afghan ambassador to Italy, Karzai was invited by Italian Prime Minister Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.
Having 3,000 soldiers in Afghanistan, Italy is one of the major troop-contributing countries to the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force. It has also evinced an interest in the country's reconstruction.
On June 2, 1946, Italians voted in a popular referendum for abolishing the monarchy. It is the first time that such a large number of foreign dignitaries have been invited to the unification anniversary.
