Funded by the US Department of Labour, the three-year project seeks to review
Afghanistan’s labour laws and regulations with the aim of creating a legal framework that supports the promotion of productivity and workers’ rights.
Another objective is to review, reform and strengthen the capacity of the ministry to provide services to workers and employers, with a special focus on improving labour law application, the UN agency said.
“The project will contribute to build a modern system of labour administration strengthening our capacity to provide services to workers,” Minister of Labour, Social Affairs, Martyrs and Disabled Amena Afzali said.
ILO Senior Coordinator and Representative for Afghanistan Herve Berger thanked the
US for its support and said bringing decent work to Afghans was an important contribution to the country’s stability.
Afghanistan’s 2007 Labour Code did not appear to provide comprehensive protection in line with the ILO’s core international labour standards, the UN agency said.
