GHAZNI CITY (PAN): Work on a modern gymnasium, funded by the Ministry of Counternarcotics, was launched in southern Ghazni province on Thursday.

Spread over an acre of land, the $264,000 gym would take 10 months to complete, Deputy Governor Mohammad Ali Ahmadi told Pajhwok Afghan News at foundation stone-laying ceremony.

Other steps were also being taken to popularise different sports in the restive province, he said, without elaborating on the measures.

The auditorium would have all necessary facilities for sportpeople, said Pacha Khan Hajbar, the Olympic Committee chief for Ghazni.

Special courts for spikers, cagers and footsal players will be built at the recreational facility, with a parking lot and seating capacity for 700 spectators.

Syed Hashim, a taekwondo athlete, welcomed the project as a good stride toward encouraging the youth. However, he called for more projects in addition to the gym to promote sports in the province.
