FAIZABAD (PAN): Militants attacked a security post near the police headquarters in the capital of northern Badakhshan province, sparking a gun-battle, but there were no casualties, officials said on Friday.

The attack that targeted the Jalghar post, 500 metres from the police headquarters, at around 10pm on Thursday night involved a number of insurgents, police spokesman, Khan Shirin, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Gunfire was traded between the attackers and security forces for half an hour, with the assailants firing three rocket-propelled grenades. One rocket landed in a deserted area and a second hit the wall of the post.

The assailants fled when police returned fire, Shirin said, adding blood spots were seen at the site, indicating casualties among the insurgents. “Initial reports say the attackers fled to Argo district, south of Faizabad, and police have launched a search operation there.”
