KANDAHAR CITY (PAN): One student was killed, three people including a policeman were injured on Saturday when two back-to-back explosions rocked the Kandahar University, witnesses and officials said.
The first blast took place at around 12:30pm when an explosives-rigged motorcycle was detonated in front of the university cafeteria, a student said on condition of anonymity. One of his fellows was injured in the first explosion, he told Pajhwok Afghan News.
A second explosion occurred minutes later, killing one student and injuring two others along with a policeman. Three injured people and a body were brought to hospital, Director of Public Health Abdul Qayum Pakhtun said.
A student of the engineering faculty was killed and two others of agriculture and medical faculties were injured along with a policeman, he said.
Giving a witness an engineering faculty student, Muslim, identified his dead mate as Ahmad, a third year student. Ahmad also acted as secretary to the provincial police chief, Gen. Abdul Razaq.
Deputy police chief, Col. Sher Shah Yousafzai, confirmed the blasts and casualties at the university, located in the Loya Wiayala area in the ninth police district of Kandahar City, the provincial capital.
No one has so far claimed responsibility for the blasts. The Taliban, who recently launched their spring offensive across the country, often assert responsibility for such assaults.
