22 dead in Waziristan drone strikes

22 dead in Waziristan drone strikes

Jun 08, 2011 - 17:55

ISLAMABAD(PANinfo-icon): Twenty-two suspected militants were killed in fresh US drone strikes in Pakistaninfo-icon's restive tribal region of Waziristan on Wednesday, officials and residents said.

A CIA-operated drone slammed several missiles into a compound in the Nishtar area of Shawal sub-district in North Waziristan, a Wana-based political administration official said.

Samin Khan told Pajhwok Afghan News the afternoon airstrike killed 18 suspected insurgents, including several foreigners. The compound near the Afghanistaninfo-icon was used as a Talibaninfo-icon training centre.

Fighters loyal to Hafiz Gul Bahadar had been living in the compound for some months, according to resident Haji Khan, who said the house was razed and the victims' bodies were mutilated beyond recognition.

Soon after the first attack, two missiles were fired at a vehicle carrying militants in South Waziristan, said a local intelligence operative who did not want to be named. Four rebels were killed in the strike.
