ASADABAD (PANinfo-icon): A newly-constructed building for a school was inaugurated in eastern Kunar province, officials said on Friday.

Funded by the Provincial Reconstructioninfo-icon team (PRTinfo-icon), the two-storey middle school was constructed in Marawara district at a cost of $240,000.

Educationinfo-icon Director Syed Jamaluddin Hasina told the inaugural ceremony the school, built on half an acre of land, had 12 rooms, including class rooms and administrative offices.

It has also solar electricity system, a boundary wall and the drinking water facility. He said chairs, desks and other equipment for 300 students had been made available.

The PRT head said the project was implemented in consultations with local education officials in order to enable students to continue with their studies in a peaceful environmentinfo-icon.

He urged tribal elders to cooperate with the government in keeping security of school buildings.

District chief, Habibur Rahman Mamoon, said all schools in his district were operational. However, he complained a lack of proper buildings was discouraging students, particularly girls, from continuing with their education.

Of 396 schools across Kunar, only 180 have proper buildings, with construction work on another 32 in progress.
